Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For upper undergraduate students who have met the basics of biology and materials and want a coherent account of how biomaterials are evaluated in use. The single-author treatment supplies a clinical-needs perspective alongside the collection’s material-by-material introductions and larger multi-author references. A prior foundation makes it easier to connect the clinical examples with the underlying material behaviour.
Prerequisites
Introductory chemistry, biology and basic materials concepts are helpful. Expect to connect properties, tissue responses and design constraints rather than learn only a list of implant materials.
What it covers
The framework links clinical applications with materials science and biocompatibility. Later applications extend the discussion toward translation and the setting in which products are developed. The emphasis helps connect a favourable laboratory property with the more demanding question of performance in a particular biological environment.
How to use it
Choose one application and build a table of needed functions, candidate properties and plausible failure mechanisms. Return to the foundational chapters whenever a tissue response or degradation process is unclear. Explain why the same material might behave differently in a second application. Use the chapter questions to test the reasoning behind a choice, rather than treating the material name as a complete answer.
Edition and sources
The publisher frontmatter identifies first publication in 2014, hardback ISBN 9780521899086. Later printing and online dates are not a new edition here. Only frontmatter is freely supplied; no free full-book access is claimed.
