Introduction to Mechanical Design and Manufacturing

David Jensen

An open mechanical design introduction linking requirements, concepts, components and prototypes with manufacturing and assembly decisions.

Prerequisites

Introductory engineering mathematics and physics. Basic statics, materials and technical drawing help with component discussions, but the initial design-process chapters can be read before specialist machine design.

Who this book is for

For students beginning a mechanical product design course or preparing for a design project. The book provides a broad framework for connecting customer needs with engineering requirements, concept choices and manufacturable embodiments. It is particularly useful when a student can analyze an isolated component but needs a clearer process for deciding what to design, how to compare alternatives and what a prototype should test.

Prerequisites

Introductory engineering mathematics and physics. Basic statics, materials and technical drawing help with component discussions, but the initial design-process chapters can be read before specialist machine design.

What it covers

The text addresses product design, design fundamentals, teamwork, requirements, conceptual and embodiment design, standard components, mechanisms, prototyping and design for manufacture and assembly. Manufacturing chapters cover casting, forming, machining, joining and plastics. The breadth introduces relationships among these areas rather than replacing a specialized calculation handbook for each component or process.

How to use it

Select a modest product and write measurable requirements before drawing a preferred solution. Generate alternatives using functions and a morphological chart, then explain the criteria used to choose among them. Plan a prototype around a specific uncertainty and decide what observation would change the design. Revisit tolerances, assembly sequence and manufacturing method before finalizing a component drawing. Keep the decision history visible so that a later change can be traced to its cause.
