Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For upper-level undergraduate students in civil engineering, construction or architecture moving from equilibrium calculations to structural response. It offers a free route through classical analysis methods before more extensive matrix or finite-element work. Familiarity with statics is essential because a correct algebraic calculation cannot rescue an incorrect structural model.
Prerequisites
Engineering statics, basic mechanics of materials and calculus. Be able to draw free-body diagrams, compute support reactions and interpret stress, strain and bending stiffness.
What it covers
Loads and structural idealizations establish the setting for determinate analysis. Deflection methods and compatibility extend the approach to indeterminate structures and influence lines. The sequence makes it possible to see where equilibrium is sufficient and where material response supplies additional information.
How to use it
Start each example by identifying members, supports, loads and the degree of indeterminacy. Predict the deformed shape before calculating a displacement. Check a result with equilibrium, then test compatibility and a limiting case. Compare two methods on a small structure and explain why they agree. Consult the errata when a worked result seems inconsistent, and use current local standards for any design-code values.
