Reading Guide
Who this book is for
For students examining climate policy as a question of social relations and development. Ajl offers a clearly argued ecosocialist and anti-imperialist position, suitable for comparison with other transition proposals. It is a focused intervention in environmental geography rather than a neutral summary of every climate-policy framework.
Prerequisites
An introductory human geography, development studies or political economy course is helpful. Be able to distinguish an empirical claim about emissions from a political judgement about how transition costs should be distributed.
What it covers
Seven chapters contrast competing green transitions with an alternative organised around agriculture, working-class power and global justice. Discussions include ecological modernisation, energy demand, degrowth, social democracy, agroecology and national development. The book links what happens in fields and infrastructure systems to international relations instead of treating decarbonisation as a matter of buying different consumer products.
How to use it
Make a comparison table for two transition proposals, recording assumptions about land, energy, labour, trade and responsibility for historical emissions. Trace one food or energy system across national boundaries and identify where its benefits and burdens accumulate. Separate the author’s normative commitments from the evidence supporting a particular claim. Write an objection from a competing perspective, then assess what policy change would follow if that objection were correct. Update quantitative examples with clearly dated sources.
