Reading Guide

Who this book is for

For students beginning sustained drama analysis through a compact complete play. The domestic setting makes it possible to track how information, objects and relationships change over a few acts. The text can be read independently or used for performance exercises, but interpretation should consider what an audience sees and hears rather than treating it only as a short novel.

Prerequisites

Know the difference between dramatic dialogue and stage directions. No Norwegian is needed for this translation. Some context on nineteenth-century marriage, money and gender expectations will sharpen interpretation of the characters’ choices.

What it covers

The three acts develop a household conflict through concealed information, financial obligations, social expectations and a changing understanding of marriage. Dialogue and stage directions distribute knowledge unevenly among characters and audience. The play is useful for examining dramatic irony, entrances and exits, the significance of everyday objects and the relationship between private speech and public respectability.

How to use it

Read the play once without stopping to establish the sequence of revelations. On a second pass, mark who knows each important fact and when the audience learns it. Stage a short exchange in two different ways, varying pause, movement or emphasis while retaining the words. Write an interpretation explaining how the change affects power or sympathy, and support it with the surrounding action. Compare a performance with the printed directions.
