Reading Guide

Who this book is for

For undergraduates exploring postcolonial and women’s literature through a focused Southeast Asian case. Goodlander brings novels, performance, film and ethnographic reflection into conversation. The book is useful when a course asks how representations of home and mobility shape identity, without assuming that every woman or every region shares the same experience.

Prerequisites

Experience reading literary works closely is helpful. A basic introduction to gender or postcolonial study provides useful questions; the book supplies context, and Indonesian-language proficiency is not assumed for its English discussion.

What it covers

Organized through travel by foot, train, boat and plane, chapters examine wandering, dance, national and global space, mixed identity, exile and return. The introduction situates women’s voices within Indonesian literary and national histories, including colonial inheritances and gendered exclusions. Literary interpretation and embodied observation are related methods, but neither is treated as a transparent account of an entire society.

How to use it

Track one character’s route and mark who permits or restricts movement. Compare the meaning of home at the beginning and end of a work. Ask how genre and the medium of performance alter what an audience can see. Keep the author’s ethnographic position separate from a fictional speaker’s experience. Compare two cases before generalizing, and use the notes on language and translation when an interpretation depends on a culturally specific term.
