Topology Without Tears

Sidney A. Morris

A complete introductory topology book developing open sets, continuity, compactness and products through examples and sustained proof practice.

Prerequisites

Sets, functions and elementary proof techniques are necessary. A first analysis course helps with metric-space intuition, but readers must learn to reason from topological definitions rather than rely only on familiar Euclidean pictures.

Reading Guide

Who this book is for

For undergraduates entering point-set topology and readers strengthening proof writing. Early explanations include the thought process behind some arguments, while exercises require independent work. The main sequence establishes general topology; the substantial appendix on topological groups is a graduate extension with a different level of mathematical demand.

Prerequisites

Sets, functions and elementary proof techniques are necessary. A first analysis course helps with metric-space intuition, but readers must learn to reason from topological definitions rather than rely only on familiar Euclidean pictures.

What it covers

Topological spaces, bases, closure, subspaces, homeomorphisms, continuous maps, metric spaces, compactness, products and quotient spaces form the principal route. Further topics and appendices include infinite sets, approximation results, dynamical ideas and topological groups. This breadth makes selective course planning important rather than implying that all 729 pages are equally introductory.

How to use it

Keep a list of examples that distinguish nearby definitions: connected need not mean path connected, and a convergent sequence may not capture every topological phenomenon. Before reading a proof, write the exact statement with quantifiers and attempt a finite or familiar example. Reconstruct the proof from definitions, then test why each hypothesis matters. Work a substantial selection of exercises without expecting a solutions manual, and use the author’s proof-writing videos when the logical structure is the obstacle.
