The Open Handbook of Linguistic Data Management

Andrea L. Berez-Kroeker; Bradley McDonnell; Eve Koller; Lauren B. Collister (editors)

An open linguistic-data handbook connecting ethical collection, description, archiving, sharing and reuse with practical research workflows.

Prerequisites

Basic linguistics and some experience working with recordings, transcriptions or datasets are useful. No particular programming language is required across the handbook. You should be willing to plan documentation and file organisation before collecting data, and to consider permissions and community relationships alongside technical storage.

Who this book is for

For graduate linguists and advanced students preparing fieldwork or an empirical project. The handbook is useful before a collection becomes too large to manage. It complements fieldwork technique books by showing how research materials can remain understandable, findable and usable by collaborators, future researchers and the people represented in them.

Prerequisites

Basic linguistics and some experience working with recordings, transcriptions or datasets are useful. No particular programming language is required across the handbook. You should be willing to plan documentation and file organisation before collecting data, and to consider permissions and community relationships alongside technical storage.

What it covers

The first part develops principles from archiving, information science and data stewardship. The second presents projects across linguistic subfields that show how general principles become concrete practice. Topics connect data creation, annotation, description, citation, discovery and long-term preservation. Findability does not automatically imply unrestricted access; appropriate restrictions and responsibilities must remain visible in a well-managed collection.

How to use it

Take a small approved dataset and write a management plan covering file names, formats, versions, metadata, consent and access. Ask another reader to identify a recording and understand its annotation without your explanation. Record the obstacles, revise the documentation and choose an archive whose policies fit the project. Use a case chapter from another subfield to identify a practice your own workflow has overlooked.
